Son of William and Lillian Flowers of The Red Lion Inn, Blundeston, Suffolk.
He married Carrie Hemstock of 8 Columbia Avenue, Mansfield in the spring of 1941. Their son, Paul W was born in 1943, he was about 1 year old when his father was killed.
Carrie married again in 1947 to William Farnell.
The 7th Bn was formed in May 1939. It was part of one of the follow-up units sent to Normandy after D-Day. The unit was part of Operation Charnwood, 8th-9th July 1944. This operation consisted of 3 infantry divisions attacking Caen from the north. By the end of the day they had cleared a path through several villages to the outskirts of Caen.

Local footballers and many others received with regret that news of the death in action of former inside-left for mansfield Town F.C. Sgt I J Flowers 8 Columbia Avenue Big Barn LAne Mansfield. He joined up in 1939. He was a very promising player for the Town club and had numerous friends in Mansfield and District.
