
Cyril Burrows
He had been educated at Carter Lane School and the Berry Hill open air school, before joining the army in 1938. On the 1939 England and Wales Register he was listed as a bricklayer.

Son of William Robert and Emma Burrows of 20 Little Barn LAne Mansfield.
Siblings: Gladys (1907), Harold (1910),William (1912), Frank (1913), Lily (1915), Arthur (1916) and Elsie (1921).
He married Gladys Elizabeth Lambert in 1940 and Cyril born on 21st December 1942, 9 days after Cyril snr's death. According to the newspaer report Gladys received the news of her husband's death as she returned from registering their son's birth.
Cyril had initially enlisted in 1938 and served 9 months with the Royal Engineers based on the Rock of Gibralter but was sent home as unfit to serve. He rejoined and was sent to the Middle East in June 1942.

We are informed that Sapper Cyril Burrows of the R.E. was killed in action on 12th December last.
After attending Carter Lane School and the late Berry Hill Open Air school he served an apprenticeship with Mr C H Hill as a brick-layer. He first joined the army in 1938 when he served 9 months with the R.E. in Gibralter, he was sent home as unfit for service abroad and went out to the Middle East last June.
He was the youngest of six sons of Mr & Mrs W R Burrows of 20 Little Barn Lane, Mansfield. His wife had been to register the birth of a son born on the 21st December last and on returning home was handed the notification of death.
He leaves a wife, a daughter and a son.
Open Air Schools: a movement started in the early 1930's along with sanatoriums to combat TB. During the summer children stayed in tents or wooden huts and were taught either outside or in open sided class rooms. The opinion was that they needed plenty of fresh air to fight off diseases especially lung diseases such as TB.
