Son of Joseph and Eliza Barnes of 53 Newcastle Street, Huthwaite. Joseph died in 1927 and Eliza in 1926.
Siblings: Annie (1900), Mabel (1902), Joseph (1906), Anderson (1909) and Sarah (1910).
In his will Sidney left £98 9s 2d to his brother, Anderson who lived at 13 Kirkby Road, Sutton in Ashfield.
Alan Barnes notes 'My Great Uncle Sidney Barnes joined the Notts & Derby Sherwood Foresters. He was at Dunkirk and Anzio where he was twice injured. In December 1944 following the decimation of the 14th Sherwood Foresters he was redesignated to York & Lancs and promoted to Lance Corporal. On 2nd January 1945 he attended his 1st NCO’s cadre and was killed by German mines placed in the building. I believe 14 were killed in total.'

14th Battalion Sherwood Foresters
• Formation and Early Service:
The 14th Battalion was formed in 1940 as part of the British Army's expansion during World War II.

It saw action in the Middle East, North Africa, and Italy.

The 14th Battalion was heavily involved in the Italian campaign, fighting alongside the 2nd and 2/5th Battalions, Sherwood Foresters.
• Anzio Beachhead:
The 14th Battalion, along with the 2nd Battalion, experienced intense fighting at the Anzio Beachhead, a particularly brutal battle in Italy.
• High Casualties:
The Anzio campaign resulted in significant casualties for the Sherwood Foresters, with the 14th Battalion experiencing some of the highest losses.
