TOWER HILL MEMORIAL Panel 45.

SS Empire Sky

On November 6th, 1942, the British cargo ship Empire Sky, built in 1941 by Thompson Joseph L. & Sons and owned by MOWT, was on a voyage from Hull to Reykjavik and Archangel with government stores, ammunition and aircraft. She was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-625. The Empire Sky blew up in a terrific explosion with debris falling over a wide area. All 60 people, 42 crew and 18 gunners lost their lives, near Spitsbergen. Able Seaman Edward Whyles from Worksop was among the dead. (wrecksite.eu)
