SS Empire Hawksbill

SS Empire Hawksbill was an American Cargo steamer of 5,652 grt built in 1920 by South Western, San Pedro, United States as the Western Nivaria SS for the US Shipping Board, Los Angeles. In 1928 she was renamed Golden Coast for the Oceanic & Oriental Navigation Co., San Francisco. In 1937 renamed Delawarean for the American Hawaiian S.S. Co., New York. In 1940 given to Britain and renamed Empire Hawksbill for the MOWT. On the 19th July 1942 she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-564 about 200milesnorth of the Azores. 45 people were lost including Steward Frederick Lymer. (wrecksite.eu)
