WORKSOP (RETFORD ROAD) CEMETERY Sec. 19. Grave 350.
The 2nd Battalion at Dunkirk: The 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters fought under the 1st Infantry Division alongside the Guards brigades. They suffered immense casualties while holding the outer canal lines at Dunkirk—specifically near the Furnes (Veurne) sector—and were largely evacuated by June 3, 1940.Context of June 11: Because Private Taylor's date of death is over a week after the Dunkirk evacuation concluded, it heavily indicates that he was severely wounded during the final defense of the pocket and later succumbed to his wounds, or he was captured and died shortly after entering German captivity as a Prisoner of War (POW).
