He had joined the RAF in 1937 and once war was declared undertook 45 bombing missions [n.e.p.12.7.1942].

Manchester IL7494 took off 17.42 2 Dec 1941 from Woolfox Lodge to bomb Boulogne. Exploded in mid-air and crashed in the sea off Boulogne. No survivors. Fatalities:

Squadron Leader J L Riley, Pilot Officer R Adcock, Sergeant C L Wells, Sergeant J V Randall, Flight Sergeant J Wilson, Sergeant J B Leigh (RNZAF), Sergeant J Crawford.
