
Harold George Turner
Educated at Newark Technical College and was articled to the Borough Engineer of Worksop. He was a pupil at the Borough Electricity Works in Worksop in 1939.
He had learned to fly at Doncaster airport and had become a member of the RAF Volunteer Reserve. He enlisted at the outbreak of war.

Son of Harold Ernest and Mary Elizabeth Turner. Harold snr was the Registra of Birth, Marriages and Death for Mansfield.
Harold, probably known has George as this is how he is listed in The Book of Remembrance, had a brother Nigel born in 1910 who became a Church of England ordained minister.
Had enlisted at the start of the war after learning to fly whilst a student. He had taken part in operations over Germany, France and Norway.

Took off from RAF Castle Kennedy, near Stranrear, Dumfries & Galloway.
Whilst on camera gun trials they stalled and crashed during the initial climb from take off.
George was a member of the Caterpillar Club for an operation on 11/2-12/2/1941. The Caterpillar Club was for airmen who had bailed out of their planes and they received a certificate and a lapel badge in the shape of a catterpillar. Caterpillar after the silkworm for the silk used to make parachutes.

Sgt-Pilot H. G. Turner Friends in this district will hear with regret of the death whilst on active service of Sgt Pilot Harold George Turner 21 year old son of Mr & Mrs H E Turner of St John's Place, Mansfield.
Sgt Pilot Turner, a native of Tuxford was educated at Newark Technical College. Before the war he articulated to the Borough Engineer of Worksop and during that time learned to fly at Doncaster airport and became a member of the Volunteer Reserve. He joined up on the outbreak of war and had taken part in bombing operations over Germany, France and Norway.

The funeral of Sgt Pilot Harold George Turner aged 21 younger son of Mr &Mrs H E Turner of 21 St John's Terrace, mansfield and formerly of Ollerton whose death whilst on active service with the RAF was recorded in our last issue took place on Friday at Tuxford.
The body rested in the church overnight guarded by members of the Home Guard under the command of Lt G Labon and they sibsequently relieved by men of the regular army. The coffin was draped with the Union Jack. On either side of the footpath stood members of the Home Guard and they followed with arms reversed. Home Guardsmen were also bearer. After the coffin was lowered into the groundthe Last Post and Reveille were sounded by Sgt J. M. Howie and the Firing Party under Sgt H Soper fired volleys over the open grave.
