Julian was the wireless operator baoard Lancaster lll ND868 which took off 1930 23 Sept 1944 from Metheringham to breach the Dortmund-Ems Canal N of Munster at Ladbergen. Cause of loss not established. There were six fatlities: Julian + J Isaac (P), D Levene (FE), GG Bryan (N), HI Shepherd (ABB, JFW Clarke (AG), FA McLaughlan (AG). An eighth crew member Flight Lieutenant Sidney Henry Jones survived to become a POW.

136 Lancasters and 5 Mosquitoes of 5 Group bombed the Dortmund-Ems Canal 23rd September 1944. A 6 mile stretch was drained when 2 breaches were made early in the raid by direct hits by Tallboy bombs (12,000lbs each) dropped by 617 Sqdn.

14 Lancasters, more than 10% of the Lancaster force deployed on this raid, were lost.
