P/O Richards was the pilot of Lancaster III ND844 PH-M which took off 23.22 10 April 1944 from Wickenby to bomb railway yards at Aulnoye in Northern France when it crashed at Sailly-Cambrai,5 km. north west of Cambrai.

Also killed were Sgt Ronald Keneth Barlow (W/Op), Sgt Ronald Johnson (F/Eng), Sgt John Smith (AG), Sgt Eric Belmont Taylor (AG) and Sgt Frank Wright (Nav).

Sgt Keith Charles Kent (BA) survived the crash and he was held as a prisoner of war.
