Family history

George William Clawley was the son of Hilda Clawley and the brother of Frances Clawley. In 1921, they lived with Hilda's mother and sisters. In 1939, George and Edna May Horobin from 3, Lamberts Row, St Peters Street, Radford, were married at Nottingham and their daughter Geraldine was born in 1940.

Military history

Educated at Wem Grammar School, Clawley joined the RAF in 1936.

Fairy Battle L5288 took off from Echemines. Shot down attacking a vehicle convoy near Vergies (Somme) 15 km SSE of Abbeville France. No survivors:

Flying Officer J E Vernon (Pilot), Sergeant George William Clawley (Observer), Temporary Sergeant J F Atkins (Wireless Operator).
