Military history

During the night of 10th-11th May 1941 Bernard was killed during the most devastating raid on London, about 1480 people were killed that night and the House of Commons was hit. Two 1,000lb bombs fell on the west side of the Kings Cross station, destroying the general offices, booking hall and a bar, and blowing out a large section of roof (https://vgy.me/u/5NlzHP). Twelve people were killed, Bernard was killed near platform one, two other military policemen and four Home Guardsmen were also killed while escorting German airmen who had been shot down. The POWs were picked up at either Victoria or Charing Cross station by army vehicle and taken to Kings Cross.

Extra information

While in the Grenadier Guards he had been a bearer at the funeral of King George V and also on duty at the Coronation of King George VI.
