Military history

RAF Commands: Richard Croos and Walter Henry Trinder were seen to leave a collapsed trench at the cessation of heavy bombing by Sgt Fairbanks, but has they made their way to the rear defence line both were hit and killed by machine gun fire. They were buried at Maleme, Crete.
On the 20th May 1941 German gliders landed close to Maleme Airfield these were then reinforced by paratroopers dropped from Junkers. Despite hugh losses the Germans were able to dig in and eventually they over-ran the airfield.
The Liftwaffe supported the ground invasion with Stuka attacks on the Allied forces.
Once the airfield was taken the Germans it became a base for them to bring in more troops and supplies and therfore they were able to complete the conquest of Crete.
