Son of Tom ans Nellie Askew of Edwinstowe.
Tom died when Gerald was only 18 months old. In 1939 Nellie and Gerald were living with Doris Smith, Nellie's oldest daughter, and her husband William Smith at 144 Church Road, Edwinstowe.
Gerald was baptised at St Mary's Church, Edwinstowe on 8th August 1916.
Siblings: Doris (1901), Mabel (1904) and Norah (1917).

Military history

The 7th Bn of the Welsh Fusilliers landed in Normandy on the 23rd June 1944 and were involved in the heavy fighting to gain a foothold in France.
