Young Welbeck Miners Death. The deceased was Leslie Vardy and a miner at Welbeck. A married man and a miner at Welbeck Colliery living at 52 Jackson Terrace, Welbeck Colliery Village.
Amos Priest of 25 Jackson Terrace Welbeck Colliery Village and a member of the Home Guard said at 12:35 Sunday morning he was in the guard room with other members and was standing at one end of the table and the deceased was at the other end.
After loading he was fixing a safety catch when his finger slipped and caught the trigger. Vardy fell down and a witness saw a piece of plaster fall from the wall. The coroner recorded that Vardy died of a bullett wound to the chest caused by the accidental discharge by a member of the Home Guard whilst on duty.
Mr Vardy, father of the deceased " I don't want these boys to upset themselves unduly about it. I am quite satisfied it was a pure accident."
