Family history

Son of Ernest and Lily Portman of Birkland Avenue, Warsop.
Raymond had an older brother, Clifford born in 1918 who was also in the R.A.F. He survived and died aged 97 in 2016.

Military history

26 Elementary FTS RTAG was a flight training school part of the Rhodesian Air Training Group. Based at RAF Guinea Fowl near Gwelo it trained pilots from all over the then empire.
Raymond was killed during an accident on landing and died of a fracture at the base of his skull.
He had almost completed his training and should have received his wings the following week.

Raymond Portman who was a prominment member of the Warsop Air Training Corps and the youngest son of Mt & Mrs Ernest Portman of Birkland Avenue has been killed in Southern Rhodesia. Twenty-one years of age he had flown every type of Allied aircraft. He had almost completed his training and should have received his wings at the end of this week.
