Son of George and Gertrude Beatrice Paling of 15 Prest Avenue, Welbeck Colliery Village.
Siblings: George Martin (1911), Marjorie (1913-1918), Alfred John (1916), and Ida (1918) .
George snr died in 1945 and Gertrude married William Cooper in 1952.

A 650 aircraft raid over Frankfurt of which 41 planes were lost. The Germans had managed to plot the route soon after the main force left the British coast and deployed night fighters along the route.
Despite the decoy fires which were lit the raid destroyed many public and municiple buildings and left 23,000 homeless.
4 of the crew were killed and 3 were taken prisoner when the aircraft crashed.
