A 650 aircraft raid over Frankfurt of which 41 planes were lost. he Germans had managed to plot the route soon after the main force left the British coast and deployed night fighters along the route.
Despite the decoy fires which were lit the raid destroyed many public and municiple buildings and left 23,000 homeless.
4 of the crew were killed and 3 were taken prisoner when the aircraft crashed.
