Eighteen 90 Squadron Lancasters (17 returning safely) were part of a 506 aircraft attack, 15th/16th October 1944, on Wilhelmshaven, a major enemy naval base. The force consisted of 257 Halifaxes, 241 Lancasters and 8 Mosquitoes. It was the last of 14 raids against the port which had begun in 1941. Severe damage was reported to business and residential areas with 30 people killed and 92 injured. Overall, Wilhelmshaven seems to have escaped relatively lightly, according to Middlebrook and Everitt - 'In 26 RAF and American raids, only 510 civilians and 24 servicemen and 30 foreign workers were killed.'
