Educated at Welbeck Village School and then Mansfield Technical College. He was employed in Welbeck Colliery Weigh Office. Prior to enlisting in 1940 he was a founder member of the Home Guard.

Family history

Son of Samuel Murfin Hill and Elsie Hill of 34 Elkesley Road, Welbeck Colliery Village.
He had been baptised at St Thomas' Church in Krkby in Ashfield on 5th October 1921.
Siblings an older brother, Samuel, born in 1918 and a younger brother, Thomas, born in 1928. He also had at least one sister, Peggy who served with the W.A.A.F

Military history

Based at Evanton, Ross and Cromerty, Scotland he was killed when the plane he was in, (Botha L6408), suffered engine failure and crashed into the Moray Firth 5 miles off Fort George, Invernesshire. He was a wireless operator under training.

Mr and Mrs S Hill of 34 Elkesley Road, Welbeck Colliery Village have received the trajic news that their son LAC Douglas Evelyn Hill lost his life in an aircraft accident. LAC Hill had just completed his training and was a !st Class W.O.A.M. Previous to joining up in 1940 he was a memberof the local Home Guard battallion when it was first inaugregated.
He died along side his friend Arthur Leonard Nutter.
