On the 1939 England and Wales Register, Wilfred is shown has being a mechanical and constructual draughtsman and that he had already enlisted into the RAF Vol Res as an observer.

Son of Arthur John and Hannah Fretwell of 81 Lime Crescent Church Warsop. In 1921 the family, including Wilfred's 2 siblings, Charles (1913) and Theresa (1915), where living at St Joseph's Rectory, Langwith Road, Shirebrook. Persumably Hannah was providing housekeeping duties for the resident Catholic priest, Charles Froes.
In 1939 the family had moved to 81 Lime Crescent, Church Warsop.
In his will Wilfred left £139 17s to his sister Theresa's husband, Albert Horace Bradley.

Flew from Qotafiyah, Egypt to raid the JU52/3m transports at Maleme Airfield Crete but was shot down by a BF 109 over Suda Bay, Crete.
Two other crew members were also killed, Stanley Forrester and Ronald Hall.

Mr A J Fretwell of Church Warsop has received official notification that his son Sgt Observer W Fretwell is missing following operations in the Middle East. He was a member of the Volunteer Reserve of the RAF and had gained the rank of Sgt Observer soon after the outbreak of war.
Wilfred died on his 22nd birthday.
