Family history

Son of William Henry and Alice Mary of Warsop, Nottinghamshire. Victor was one of ten children.
Baptised at St Peter & St Paul's Church, Church Warsop on 10th of March 1920.
In 1921 the family were living at 16 Newcastle Street, Mansfield Woodhouse and by 1939 they had moved to 23 Wood Street, Warsop.

Military history

Served aboard HMS Eskimo, a destroyer, which was badly damaged by torpedo from Z2 Georg Thiele at the 2nd Battle of Narvik on the 12th April 1940. The bow was blown off and the ship had to return to Newcastle for extensive repairs. Narvik is a town in Norway and the Royal Navy were supporting the Norweigian resistance to the German invasion of Norway.

The death occured on Saturday of Mr Victor Wm Coleman of 23 Wood Street, Warsop. While serving at the 2nd Battle of Narvik he was blown overboard and picked up by a hospital ship. After being landed in Scotland he was a patient for some years at the Ransome Sanatorium. He was the son of Mr & Mrs Henry Coleman.

The funeral took place last Thursday of Victoe William Coleman, the eldest son of Mr & Mrs W H Colemann of 23 Wood Street, Warsop who died on January 6th.
The Coffin was covered with the Union Jack and was borne to the graveside by members of the Warsop Branch of the British Legion.
The deceased was only 24 years of age was in the Royal Navy at the outbreak of war and was invalided out after taking part in the Battle of Narvik in 1940.
He never fully recovered and was a patientat the Ransome Sanatorium for sometime. The last two years he lived at the Sherwood Hostel, Rainworth.
