Military history

The 2nd Bn of the Scots Guards took part in Operation Avalanche, the invasion of Italy at Salerno. The invasion started on the 9th of September and in order to secure tactical surprise there was no prelim naval or aerial bombardment. However this did not work and has the troops were landing the Germans used a loud speaker to declare in English
"Come on in and give up. We have you covered".
There followed several days of heavy fighting to gain a secure foothold.
