Family history

Known as Wilfred.
Son of Charles and Jessie Randall of 21 Portland Street, Mansfield Woodhouse.
He was baptised Joseph Wilfred at St Edmund's church on 21/11/1917 and the family were living at 21 Portland Street, Mansfield Woodhouse. This was Jessie's mother's home (Laura Pogmore) and the family were still living there in 1939 with Laura who was 80 years old.
Soblings:Charles Henry born 1915 and Alfred born 1924. Alfred also serverd during the war, he was in the Royal Navy.

Military history

The 3rd battalion of the Tank Regiment were in North Africa and took part in Operation Gazala. Between 26th May and 21st June 1942 fighting took place around the village of Gazala west of Tobruk, against German and Italian forces under the leadership of Rommel.

Mr and Mrs Randall of 21 Portland Street, Mansfield Woodhouse have received news that their second son, Trooper Joseph Wilfred Randall(Tank Corps) aged 24 years is reported to have been killed in the Middle East on 30th May.
Trooper Randall had served 2 and a half years in the forces. First going to the Middle East then to Greece and when evacuated back to the Middle East.
Before the war he was employed by Messrs H Rouse and Sons of Mansfield Woodhouse.
Remembered on the Alamein Memorial col 24.
