The Allies had landed at Salerno, Italy in September 1944 but their advance had been stopped at the Gustav Line, south of Rome. Churchill ordered landings at Anzio to bypass the German Forces. The landings were made on the 22nd January 1944. However they also became pinned down especially when the reclaimed marshland around Anzio was flooded when the Germans turned off the drainage pumps. They eventually broke out of the beach-head in May 1944 and headed to Rome, which surrended on the 4th of June. The news that Rome had surrended was relayed to the troops waiting to cross the English Channel for D-Day.
Cleophas is a biblical name.
