Military history

King's Shropshire Light Infantry took part in Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy.
The British 2nd Army was over the Rhine and advancing across the North German Plain. It's objective was Schleswig-Holstein with the rivers Weser, Aller and Leine the only remaining major obstacles before the Elba. German forces appear to have been in total disarray and British confidence was high. However a new division had been formed from Naval personnel and Hitler Youth, and they were involved in fighting from 4th April to the 19th April.
Alfred was one of 13 from his battalion to be killed on the 8th April 1945
