Clifford was fatally injured on 14th November 1940, by a high explosive bomb which blew up a fire crew from Triumph Road Fire Station, Nottingham. They were one of several fire crews from Nottinghamshire that had been deployed to Coventry as part of the regional reinforcement scheme from the Auxiliary Fire Service North Midlands Region. He was taken to St. Cross Hospital in rugby where he died in the ealry hours of 15th November 1940.
