Ruth was fatally injured when a high explosive bomb fell at the bottom of the garden during an air raid on Newark. She had just returned home in Laxton's Ambulance after an evening's traing in Southwell. Ruth was the first member of the civilian services in Nottinghamshire to be killed by direct enemy action.
