Military history

Accidentally shot by L/Cpl John Shield Spiers of 49 North Hamilton, Kilmarnock. During changing of the guard at Royal Engineers Barracks, Newark. A rifle accidentally discharged, the bullet hitting Sapper Johnson in the left eye and passing through his brain killing him instantly. L/Cpl John Shield Spiers was charged with manslaughter, but acquitted at his trial. The jury stopped the trial at the direction of the judge due to them feeling this was an accident with no case to answer.
