The son of Ernest Wilkinson Read and Annie Read of 3 Kipling Street, Mansfield. Fred was one of 7 sons, Charles, Herbert, Frank, Walter, Richard and Sidney as well as a sister, Hilda.
He married Elsie Foulkes on the 26th December 1929. They had 2 children, Barbara (1933) and Dennis(1936). In 1939 they were living at 72 Peel Crescent, Mansfield

While working in Surry repairing bomb damaged houses a Mansfield bricklayer, Mr Frederick Arthur Read(36) of 72 Peel Crescent, Bull Farm, was killed during a Flying Bomb raid. He was visiting friends at the time and when the bomb exploded several other people lost thier lives.
A native of Mansfield he was the third son of Mr & Mrs E. W Read of 3 Kipling St. He was engaged on work in bombed areas in variuos parts of the country, Hull and Birmingham being among the places where he was employed. Previously employed locally for about 5 years on building sites in the Nottingham area. Mr Read leaves a widow and two children.
Of his six surviving brothers three are serving in the forces, two in India whilst a third is in the Burma theatre of war.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. K. B. Framlington at St John's Church on Tuesday afternoon.
