Son of Clarence and Emily Ratcliffe of 10 Peel Crescent, Mansfield.
In 1940 he married Ada Pinder, they had 2 children, Walter in 1941 and Coral in 1942.
In 1939 Ada lived with her parents at 21 Broomhill Lane, Mansfield and Walter lived at 10 Peel Crescent, Mansfield.
Ada married again in 1948, to George Crowder.
HMS Hurworth: Launched 16th April 1941 and was sunk on 22nd October 1943.
HMS Hurworth left Alexandria on 21st of October 1943 taking supplies to Leros, Doedecanese Islands. The Adrias hit a mine and Hurworth went to give assisstance when she too hit a mine. The ship split in two and sank in 15 minutes. 133 men dies and 85 survived.
