Military history

Royal Artillery 9 Coast Regt was in Malaya from 1940 and were at the fall of Singapore.
On the 12th Feb the coastal batteries were destroyed and at 01:30 hours on the 13th the garrisson was marched to the Indian Recreation Grounds in Singapore where the unit is formed into an Infantry Battalion and used as support troops. At 16:30 hours on the 15th 1942 the regiment ceased to exist and as a fighting unit and was disbanded.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 28/2/1946: Spared Frightful Experience.
Mrs Davis of 103 Chesterfield Rd, Mansfield has received a letter which relates the circumstances in which her son, Gnr George Davis, met his death in the Burma sector. The letter states "he died before the work commenced on the 'Death Railway' from Maulein to Bangkok and was thus was at least spared probably the most frightful experience that any of us are likely to have in a lifetime. It is very hard to describe the conditions under which we were living at Mergin at the time of your son's death to people who have not seen that part of the world"
Gunner Davis' widow lived at Birkland Street, Mansfield and he leaves 2 children.
