Son of Samuel and Emily H Pepperday of Church Street, Pleasley and Samuel worked as the caretaker of the parish hall.
In 1938 Joe married Agnes Chappell and their son, Eric, was born in 1940.
Agnes married again in 1950 to Thomas Wilson.

Military history

Enlisted in February 1941
S.S Norman Prince; Sunk by U-156 . A torpedo hit the engine room off Martinique. Most of the lifeboats were damaged in the attack and although only a handful of men could get into the boats only 16 men from a crew of 49 died.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 23/7/1942: Seaman Missing: Able seaman, Gunner Joe Virdin Pepperday, younger son of Mr & Mrs S Pepperday of Pleasley is reported missing. Mr Pepperday who is 27 years of age is a native of Pleasley and was a scholar at the Rotherham Road School. He joined the Royal Navy in February 1941 being previously employed by Mr Robinson of Clumber Street. He is the husband of Mrs Agnes Pepperday and brother of Eric Pepperday, electrical engineer of Pleasley.
