Military history

HMS Sultan was a shore base at Singapore and was abandoned with the fall of Singapore in 1942.
Ordnance Artificer: specially trained to maintain, service and repair weaponary.
Victor died of malnutrition whilst a P.O.W at Palembang, 3 days before the end of the war with Japan. Buried at Jakarta War Cemetery, plot 4. H.1.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 16/4/1942: Missing in the Far East. Mr & Mrs F Girling of 14 Stacey Road, Mansfield have received notification that thier son, Petty Officer (Ordnance Artificer) Victor. F. Girling has been reported missing while serving in Singapore. He joined up in February 1941 previously employed as a fitter at Glapwell Colliery.

Mr & Mrs F Girling of 14 Stacey Road, Mansfield have just received the sad news that thier only son, Petty Officer Victor Girling who was taken prisoner by the Japenese at the Fall of Singapore is now reported dead. On two occassions a postcard had been received saying Victor was alive and well. It is now reported that he died on 3rd August 1945 in Palembang, Sumartra. P.O. Girlingprior to joining the Navy was employed at Glapwell Colliery on duties that filled him to stop quickly on the promotion ladder in the Navy and he was making progress towards speedy advancement.
A young man of fine physique he was educated at Pleasley Hill schools and attached to the Meden Square Church and school.
Much sympathy has been extended to Mr and Mrs Girling in their great loss.
