Family history

The son of Ernest and Gertrude Carter of 437 Chesterfield Road North, Pleasley Hill.
In 1921 the family were living with Ernest snr's parents John and Sarah Carter at 25 Mansfield Road, Pleasley Hill. He had a younger brother, Jack, born in 1924.

Sergeant's Fatal Revolver Trick. Shot dead in his own home.
A distressing tragedy occured in a Pleasley Hill home last monday when Sgt Ernest Carter aged 22 of 87 Bagshaw Street, Pleasley who was at home on leave was shot dead with a revolver. He was demonstrating a trick with the revolver but a live cartridge was accidentally discharged and a bullet passed through his head and into the ceiling.
At the inquest held at mansfield the father, Ernest Carter, snr, a miner told that his son who was in the army before the war and had come home on leave last saturday.
After supper he was demonstrating to his mother and friends a trick with the revolver. This consisted of pulling the trigger against a blank cartridge although there was a live round in the weapon. He pulled the trigger once, with the muzzle pointed to his head and nothing happened. He spun the chamber and repeated the trick. He again put the revolver near his head but when he pulled the trigger the second time at fired and the bullet passed through his hean and he fell down dead.
The Coroner's Verdict: That Carter died from a revolver shot, self inflicted and that death was a misadventure.

Mansfield Chronicle Advertiser: 25/6/1942: The funeral of Sgt Ernest Carter whose death under tragic circumstances was reported in our last issue took plcae on Friday at the Pleasley Hill Cemetery. Sincere sympathy was extended to his parents and relatives , by many friends for the deceased was well known and popular at home and in his Army unit. He was accorded full military honours, the coffin being borne by 6 fellow sergeants.
Ernest is buried in Pleasly Hill Cametery, which was opposite the Carter family home.
