Soon after the horse bolted turning into Appleton Gate with O'Connor holding onto the horses neck. Members of the public stopped it outside the county police station and recommended O'Connor dismount. He declined and while heading back down Appleton Gate to collect his cap the horse bolted again near the Newark Arms PH. Running up Sleaford Road and into Friary Road. At Magnus Street O'Connor was thrown from the horse after the girth snapped, stricking his head on the kerb. He was take to Newark Hospital by dray but died soon afterwards.
