Military history

On the 18th November 1944 Statagem encountered a Japanese convoy and fired 3 torpedoes, they were attacked themselves but managed to fire off another torpedo which caused the Nichinan Maru to sink.
On the 22nd they were spotted and sunk by depth charges, she was flooded and sunk. 14 men managed to get to the torpedo compartment. 10 men attempted to escape via the torpedo tubes, only 8 men survived the attempt and of these only 3 survived to the end of the war. Picked up by the Japanese they were regularly beaten and mistreated which continued when they reached Singapore.

Douglas left £196 18s 4d to his father in his will.
He is remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, panel 88 col 3.
