16 May 1947 Rifleman Jozef Syguda 16th Pomeranian Infantry Brigade, died of a self inflicted gun shot wound to the head in Sudbrook Woods, Lincolnshire. Inquest held 19 May, verdict suicide, buried Newark Cemetery. Conscripted at some point into the Wehrmacht before joining the Polish Army. 16 Pomorska Brygada Piechoty was formed in Italy at the end of 1944 as part of the Polish 2nd Corp. Officers and NCOs coming from 3rd and 5th Infantry Divisions, with other ranks being Poles from across Europe, especially France or Polish POWs from the German Army. In the post war period these were added to by members of the Polish Home Army. The Brigade did not see combat and in September 1945 was regrouped in the Camerino-Metalica-Caster Raimondo area. It traveled from this region to perform guard duty in ports; including in Naples, at junctions and railways. At the same time, repatriation to Poland and other Mediterranean countries began. In the brigade, teaching as well as learning foreign languages (mainly English) continued. In September 1946, the brigade was transported to Great Britain, the soldiers were incorporated into the PKPR, and the brigade was disbanded.
