John Leslie Clarke was baptised on 21st July 1895 at Newbold, Derbyshire, he was the son of: John Charles a colliery labourer and Emma Clarke née Taylor of 54 Rosemary Street, Mansfield.

His father John Charles was born in 1871 at Stoke, Staffford, his mother Emma Taylor was born in 1871 at Wigston, Leicester, they were married on 12th May 1896 at Ashover, they had 3 children,

In the 1911 census the family were living at 5 Rosemary Street, Mansfield, John Charles 40 yrs is a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife Emma 40 yrs and their childen, John Leslie 15 yrs a bazaar assistant William Gordon 13 years and Wilfred Russell 3 yrs of age.

Military history

Private John Leslie Clarke enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 1st battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 17th April 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memroial.
