9 November 1939 Ronald Arthur Fryer aged 12 of 14 Albert Street, Newark. Struck and killed by a War Department lorry on Beaumond Cross. He was waiting alongside an RAF lorry, with shopping bags on his handlebar at the time and fell from his bike. His mother, Violet, was standing at her front door in Albert Street waiting for him to come home and saw him fall under the lorry. The driver Walter Allen Raper worked for the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield as a Bren gun machinist.
