15 January 1942 Wellington Z1265 300 Sqn. Took off from RAF Hemswell on a mission to
Hamburg at 17.48. The weather on the way to the the target was good, but during the flight it
deteriorated. The cloud ceiling was low, and visibility was limited by freezing fog. At 21:50, Z1265 radioed a request for bearings to a local airfield, directions given to RAF Hucknall. After receiving it, they passed the airfield without noticing, because of the poor visibility. After flying to the west, they again asked for a course to the airfield and turned back. But again flew past the base and after that no messages were received from them. The following day it was reported that a Wellington had crashed in the village of Clipstone, Nottinghamshire from engine failure. None of the six crew survived. All buried at Newark cemetery.
