Died at 66 Hurstwood Road along with George Jeune and Jeanne Richard, after it was struck by a HE bomb. Hannah Roth passed away 2 days later at Hendon Emergency Hospital. 2 neighbours at 68 Hurstwood Road were also killed. Phyllis had been working in London as a teacher since 1931, but still gave her home address as Coronation Street. The Luftwaffe target of the night 18/19/03/1941 had been Hull with 483 bombers being dispatched there. 33 bombers and 3 light bombers from the Hull raid moved onto the India Docks, London after failing to locate their target due to fog. Hurstwood Road hit by bombs dropped by a Heinkel He111 of 1 Squadron, Kampfgeschwader 27 (1/KG27) which bombed at 23.10, the rest a mix of He111, Ju88 of KG's 1, 27, 51, 54, 55, 76, 77 also Pathfinders of KGr 100 and 806 and 3 Bf110's of Schnellkampfgeschwader 210 (SKG210) bombing London between 01.00 and 03.00 with the exception of 1 straggler He111 of 2 Gruppe, Kampfgeschwader 27 (II/KG27) that bombed at 05.10. AWP reported 4 houses demolished at Hurstwood Road with 15 casualties of which 9 died. A 6" gas main and sewage pipes were also destroyed. George William Jeune was not found for 3 days, he had been born in South Shields, Durham in 1895. His parents being from Jersey. Harry Patrick Gerrard aged 25 killed. German refugees Rosalie Oettinger, born in Stuttgart 1885 and Gertrud Sara Benedict, born Nurnberg 1910 also killed. Both arrived at the Port of London 25/6/1939 on the RMS Strathnaver from Malta. German Jews, Gertrud had her German Citizenship annulled by the Nazi's 7/6/1940. Richard E Benedict, Gertrud husband was saved as he had been interned as an enemy alien although as a category C. He died in Wales 1974.
