He was aboard Lancaster I R5556 which crashed during a general flying practice training flight. No survivors. Fatalities: J Cowan (Pilot Instructor), AR Burgess (P), DW Lovelady (FE), AE Hannay (N), HV Adams (W/Op), E Hall (AB), AE Clark (AG), SC Johnson (AG), KT Robson (Ground Crew), LJ Rogers. (Ground Crew)

According to WR Chorley (Bomber Command Losses vol 8 p.42) this aircraft 'came down at Cromwell 4 miles NNW of Newark) at approximately 17.45 following an uncontrollable fire in the port outer engine.'

Accoridng to Chorley, Cowan 'had recently completed a tour of at least 27 operations with 9 Squadron.'
