Military history

9 January 1943 Wellington R1535 ( GR-G ) 301 Squadron took off at 17.59 with 3 others from RAF Hemswell to join a force of 33 other Wellingtons to mine around Langeoog in the Frisian Islands.

On leaving the area R1535 was attacked twice by night fighters. The first aircraft was driven off by the rear gunner. The second succeeded in damaging the starboard engine to the extent it overheated and seized. Flying on they became lost, but thinking they were 10 mins from base they started to descend into a snow blizzard. 22.30 R1535 struck the south east side of Dunmoor Hill, Northumberland, killing all the crew except the rear gunner , who still in his turret was knock unconscious as it came away from the main body of the aircraft.
