Military history

2nd Training Battalion Royal Engineers, Newark. Killed after a collision between his motorbike and a lorry, died at Nottingham General Hospital. Inquests held 6 August and 24 October, verdict accident. 2nd Lt Harper had been leading an Army convoy on his escort motorcycle along the Fosse Way.

At 08.45 on reaching the Stragglethorpe cross road a gravel lorry crossed the main road at speed striking the motorcycle. 2nd Lt Harper was thrown into the air and his right leg was severed below the knee, he also recieved severe head injuries. Died at Nottingham General Hospital later that day.

Buried Newark cemetery 7/8/1941.

John Cecil Foster of 46 Skipton Circus, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham the driver of the lorry was fined £13 for driving to the danger of the public and his licence was suspended for 6 months.
