He was the son of Percy Gordon Whitsed and Daisy M. G. Whitsed and the brother of Joan, Elizabeth and Sheila Whitsed. In 1939, they lived at 63, Middle Furlong Road, Meadows, Nottingham.
489 Squadron operated in Europe under Coastal Command. Flying Hampdens and later Beaufighters, the squadron was deployed at this stage of the war mainly in shipping recces from RAF Skitten in Scotland along the Norwegian coast. On May 19th 1943, 3 Hampdens took off at 22.26. AT 253 (P) and AN 249 (W) returned safely but P 2084 (O) was lost in unknown circumstances. According to 489 Sqdn's ORB , Record of Events May 1943 ' No shipping was seen. O was last seen flying northwards along the coast and turned on patrol. O failed to return to base.' TNA Air27/1938/26
There were no survivors. Fatalities: Whitsted (RAF)+ Reginald William Easton (RAFVR), John Ross Keeping RCAF) & Gerald Joseph Mc Eachern (RCAF).
