Alfred Bethel was the son of Edwin and Urania Bethel and the brother of Edith, Ada, John, Urania, Alfred and Dorothy Bethel. The family lived on Priory Lane Gedling in 1901 and at 6, Radford Bridge Road, Radford (both Nottingham) in 1911. On 5th December 1915, Alfred married Ethel May Rogers (1894-1934) at Lenton Parish Church Nottingham and in 1921 they lived along with their three year old son Alfred (born 14/2/1918) at 202, Russell Road, Nottingham. In 1939, by then a widower, Alfred lived with his parents at 29, Barnston Road, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham.
Alfred Bethel attested at Nottingham aged 19 years and 241 days on August 27th 1914. He stood 5’9 ¾”, weighed 133 lbs and was placed in medical category A1. He was posted as a gunner (45721) to the Royal Garrison Artillery 9/11/14 and a bombardier 20/11/15. He was promoted to corporal 27/5/16 and sergeant 21/4/18. Bethel served in the UK between enlistment and 24/9/1917. CWGC’s Debt of Honour Register lists Bethel as a recipient of the Military Medal but it has not been possible to trace any record of such an award.
