Iris Woolley was the daughter of John James and Elizabeth Woolley and the sister of Eric and Shirley Woolley. They lived at 14, Freeth Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham. In 1939, they had lived at 4, Simpkin Street, St Ann’s, Nottingham.

Composite photo. Foreground: the Woolley family was buried in adjacent graves on 12/5/1941 at Nottingham Southern Cemetery (Wilford Hill). The Freeth Street Communal shelter occupied the plot where trees now stand. Light industry replaced terraced housing on Freeth Street where the Woolleys lived. Traffic leaving the Lady Bay Bridge, a road bridge since the late 70s but which in 1941 carried trains. This important rail artery south across the Trent was a likely target for German bombers on 9/5/1941 and during an earlier raid on 15/1/1941.
