The Freeth Street Communal shelter occupied the plot where trees now stand. Light industry replaced terraced housing on Freeth Street where the Woolleys lived. Traffic leaving the Lady Bay Bridge, a road bridge since the late 70s but which in 1941 carried trains. This important rail artery south across the Trent was a likely target for German bombers on 9/5/1941 and during an earlier raid on 15/1/1941.
