Sydney Radford was born in 1887 at Newhall, Derbyshire, he was the son of the late Joseph Radford a coal miner Stallman and Harriett Radford née Hood of 16 Gladstone Street, Mansfield. His father Joseph was born in 1844 at Witherley, Leicestershire, he died in 1905 aged 61 yrs, his mother Harriett Hood was born in 1849 also at Witherley, Leicestershire, they were married in 1869 at Atherstone, Warwickshire, they went on to have 13 children, sadly two die in infancy or early childhood. Sydney married Grace Wright (born 2nd June 1891) on 27th December 1909 at St Peter’s Church, Mansfield, they lived at 47 Montague Street, Mansfield, they adopted a child Bertha Scaife. In the 1911 census Sydney is living with his in laws at 47 Montague Street, Mansfield, his in laws are Joseph Wright 40 yrs a shunter at Mansfield colliery he is living with his wife Florence Wright 37 yrs Sydney Radford is 23 yrs a coal miner hewer his wife Grace Radford 20 yrs also living at the address is Annie Wright 17 yrs a tin box maker, and John William Wright 15 yrs is a coal miner pony driver. In the 1911 census his widowed mother is living at 16 Gladstone Street, Mansfield, she is Harriett 62 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, John Thomas 21 yrs a coal carter, Frederick 19 yrs a coal miner hewer, and Florence 16 yrs a tin box maker.
Driver Sydney Radford enlisted at Mansfield, he served with the 29th brigade, Royal Field Artillery, he died of wounds on 30th September 1915 and is buried at Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
