A fortnight after he had been de-mobilised from the RAF Cyril C Abbott living at 13 Bolsover Street, Mansfield was found dead hanging from a beam in a lock-up garage in Newgate Lane.
At the inquest held on Tuesday evidence of identification was given by his wife Mrs Abbott who said her husband joined the RAF in 1940 and had seen about 6 weeks action in Norway.
He went down south to see his parents as he and the witness intended to live down there. He returned on the 3rd of October when he appeared to be distressed when asked "what the matter was" he replied "he was not well". The witness suggested he see a doctor but he refused. She asked Dr Burgess to visit her husband which he did and he established that he was suffering from nerves.
On October 5th, Friday, the deceased told the witnesss he was going to the garage on Newgate Lane to fit some batteries in the car, the witness found him hanging at about 2pm.
George W Archer of 34 Normanton Drive said the deceased's wife asked him if he had a spare key for the garage, witness later found the deceased hanging from the beam, about 2ft from the ground.
The coroner recorded a verdict of "suicide" by hanging whilst the balance of his mind was disturbed by illness.
